Review: When I heard that this film was being made, it reminded me that I already had the book in which I received by accident as a gift. Now I feel a bit more intrigued to read it. Knowing Mark Wahlberg signed on to do this project also peaked my interest as the news came to me after seeing him in Departed. Fab-u-lous.

Well, this film takes place during the 70s and there’s a rapist-murderer on the loose. As a father tries to cope with the loss of his eldest child, he also spirals out of control trying to hunt down answers as to what happened. His wife is not dealing well and jets off to pick fruit and clam her nerves (no lie). Susan Sarandon, the chain-smokin’ granny, did the damn thing as she brought in the comic relief at the best moments. She had me laughing especially at the fact that she takes her medicine everyday.

The youngest daughter, Lindsey Salmon, grew up with her father’s passion for knowing what happened to her sister, but was still more productive in her life than her father. The fact that the murderer kept his eye on her did not help to ease the creep factor. There was a point in the film where I was sure she would have caught the bad end of the business. The ending was not the best for me as I felt more should have happened to the murderer and I was upset that the victim came back for a kiss. I’ll read the book before giving the ending of the film the total dust off. Either way, this gets 8 blades for a film that drew me in and kept my attention. I was not bored nor did I fall asleep or call for an unnecessary bathroom break. Well done Peter Jackson. Better than the first Frodo mishap.
