Bottom-line: My memories were better than the actual film.

Review: Despite my tolerance and slight annoyance at the remake, nothing will overshadow the 80s corniness of the awesome original. Making its place on the list of film/music classics, this movie draws me in each time I watch. This 80s classic took the WOS by storm and most who saw it wanted to dance and sing in the streets of New York. The film spawned the hit series that helped to launch the careers of now notable stars like Janet Jackson (a legend & famed whisperer).

This film had talented singers and dancers who all shined through on screen but one of my favorites was Leroy. He went with his friend to help her audition and ended up getting one of the coveted spots in the school of arts. Leroy (Ray) was rough around the edges, illiterate, and an amazing dancer. Debbie Allen played one of the toughest teachers in the school who demanded every students best or booted them from her class. Cocoa (Cara) had me laughing as she was caught out there stripping and crying in front of a bogus “producers” camera. Why didn’t she just break the hell out? I wish Allen & Ray were shown more on the screen than the other cast members.

At the end of the day the memories of the film that I replayed in my head were better than the actual film I re-watched. 9 blades and an A for making dance film worth watching.
