Bottom-line: Still waiting to know what I’m “thanking” Drake for…

Review: To think I thought that So Far Gone was Drake’s first album the way it was getting promoted on the mainstream’s market; only to find that it was merely a mixtape and this album would be his first studio creation. I guess things have gotten to the point where commercial artists begin to pat themselves on the back over nonsense. I have tried really hard to give this album a chance. Listened to it twice (a rare thing I do) and still I’m not impressed with Drake’s abilities as a rapper. I really wonder if Commercial Rap has snuffed out the life of Hip Hop. The lyrics are weak and the beats are good, but what is the real appeal? No attraction so can’t see a sexual appeal of the artist and the voice isn’t something I want to hear on a continuous basis. Most of the songs I didn’t want to hear the first time around let alone a second time.

The track Unforgettable didn’t even win my attention as they sampled Aaliyah’s sampling of the Isley Brother’s hit classic At Your Best (You Are Loved). Now that’s sad. Despite what some may call as a lyrically strong album that talks about love and Drake’s introduction to fame, the contradictions are present and glaring. “Kicking bitching out the condo…” Give me a fucking break. Where’s the love there boys? Nowhere. Calling the ladies hoes, adding the sexual elements about them as though they are only sex objects and there for the pleasure of the fellas. Just be real about being a sleaze and stop pretending to be a “gentleman.” That’s the bullshit I won’t applaude.

I know I am hard on the new blood in the WOS and rightfully so. It’s my money they feel obligated to, yet they refuse to make it worth my cash to purchase the shit they produce. This album gets 5.5 blades for the music but loses 2 blades on the lyrics and ends up with a total of 3.5 blades overall and a grade of WTF?

Thanks for nothing new Drake.

About Missy T.

(Staten Island): (Researcher Asst.; Critic; Street Reporter) I am so happy to join the gang in 2002 & for being given a chance. I got into this because there was only so much Nelly that I could listen to on KTU. I needed to see what else was out there. My friends didn’t like this new job at first, but now they can’t wait to get the newest edition or log-on online to see what’s new! My parents have gotten over the music I listen to and realize that they are simply for review. I have learned that artists who continue to state their names throughout the CD are a turn off. Either way, I can’t wait for the new year to kick off right.
