New Kids on the Block: Face the Music
In the latest adventure New Kids On The Block re-enter the arena with the name fans have known for few years now and with a much smoother sound. After fighting to enjoy the right of growing up, the fellas greet the fans a little less bubble gum and a little more sultry and rugged.
in doing so they had to break away from old management and get fresh insight with new producers. If You Go Away is a hot track bringing a mellow beat with an absence of Uh-Ohs. Seems that the kids have officially claimed their individual and collective manhood.
This album was made with their long lasting fans (those who have been there from the conception of the group) as well as their newfound fans. Many songs are illustrating the growth of these men and the need they have to live in the present - as men with lives apart from the group.
The raps could use more work but they have greatly improved since the first album, New Kids On The Block. Having said that, the ballads have proven, once again, to be the fellas strong points. The dance singles are good but nothing to get carried away with. Guess this R&B girl is having a hard time getting behind a few of these tunes. "Dirty Dawg" had a good premise but the weak raps detracted from it (and the guest rapper can share the blame on this one).
This receives 6.5 blades. Even though I like the group I won't simply hand out blades blindly.
Original Drop: January 24, 1994
