It’s Good to Be Troubled

Album: Trouble

Artist(s): Akon

Official Drop Date: June 29, 2004

Blades: 6.5

Review: Akon’s debut album, “Trouble,” was worth listening to. Despite his troubled career and throwing paying fans off the stage, he’s pimped the industry. He teamed up and sampled the Fiesta Riddim on “Gunshot.” Akon talked about his love for fights; maybe that’s why his nickname is Konvicted – always in trouble. Possible prison anthem. He seems to believe that his “singing” is required, but it really is not. His type of rhyming is interesting but I’m struggling each time he begins to sing.

The usual stripper dedication songs reside on this album as they would on most rap/hip hop projects. “Yey” sounded country so the Durty South must have had its paws all over this track. Not my fav but not the worst Southern rap I’ve heard to date.

He dedicated a tune to the west side of Senegal (they claim “blocks” there too I suppose) and gave us some insight on where he’s from. Perhaps he regards his hometown as “the hood” and “the ghetto” because Negros in similar situations in America would relate better. “Keep On Callin,” “Senegal,” and “Kill the Dance,” which spoke to my Caribbean spirit, were the stand out tracks to listen for. 6.5 blades for Akon’s debut project.
