Review: Was not too sure about this one when asked to review it. Seemed like another story about a sista putting family aside for the White man. Didn’t want to see some faux-love story about another slave master ‘falling in love’ with his property.
Well I’m glad I went. Not only did this cat leave his woman, a princess, for a slave but he left her for another princess that became a slave. No one but the servants and other slaves knew her true identity. Well as jealous chicks do, when the White Egyptian princess (Amneris) found out she plotted to have them both killed. Well, things don’t only fall apart for the lovers but those close to them as well.
This play is real interesting. Cut out the VH1 video recaps and it’s pretty solid. The father’s first song hits it on the head. Why mess with a slave when I’m trying to set you up with money and power. I enjoyed watching Simone, daughter of legendary singer Nina Simone, as she played the part Aida. She replaced Heather Headley, who originated the lead role of Aida and was previously in Disney’s production of The Lion King as Nyla. Adam Pascal, Radames in this production, was previously in RENT as the originator of the character Roger. Sherie René Scott played the role of Amneris and was excellent. The entire cast was on point and made me eager to re-visit the show.
This play gets 8.5 spotlights from me.
