Review: Tonight I saw another off-Broadway production worth commenting on, The Black Angels Over Tuskegee. This production was powerful and entertaining. The entire cast proved to be aces at their craft and brought their A games to the production. The moving tale of six Tuskegee army airmen, Quenten (Layon Gray), Abe (Thom Scott II), Theodore (David W. Boykins), Elijah (Lawrence Saint-Voctor), Jerimah (Reginald L. Barnes) and Percival (David Roberts), was shared in a creative way. There were struggles between themselves and with a nation that would keep them segregated, but the Tuskegee Airmen did what they knew they could do – excel and soar as the Black Angels they were meant to be. While being given small insights into what these men had to endure, the audience was also given tidbits about other strong individuals who excelled when their nation told them they were incapable. From the truths of reality, this play was created and is one of the best productions.
The training, achieving their wings and the respect of their sergeant and trainer (Sgt. Roberts (Steve Brustien)), lead these men to respect each other for their individual struggles and the strengths they represented. Not only did they feel the need to defend a race for outright bigotry and being discounted, but they knew they had to prove to their nation and all others that Negros were extremely capable in fighting for freedom. The problem was defining what real, true freedom was.
This play was brilliant: acting, directing, writing, the works. The drama, laughs, and full out emotional roller coaster was what plays are all about. The audience was sucked into the moment and you will be too. A highly recommended play with an A + and 10 blades to the Black Angels Over Tuskegee. I’ll be a return guest and hope that it will find a spot on Broadway sooner than later. Either way, catch the play while you can!
