Artist(s): Adele
Official Drop Date: January 28, 2009
Blades: 8.5
Review: After the disappointing fall of Amy Winehouse, Britain seemed to be making attempts to rectify that mess. Enter Adele and her shot at bringing back the sounds of the 70s for all to revitalize themselves. Like Duffy, Sky, and Estelle, Adele hits all the rights cords in a very soulful way. Her voice is rich and powerful as the listener is drifted into a very good place.
19 is filled with great music and amazing vocals that accompany it all very effortlessly. The songs capture a sexiness of music that has been forgotten by most US artists as they fight for the position of the Now rather than a position in the Forever. Longevity seems to be the last thing on most of the US artists Hit Lists. She also did a cover of the Bob Dyan song “Make You Feel My Love,” and the deluxe edition had live performances from her which were nice additions. She also made a good attempt at the Sam Cooke Blues cover of “That’s It, I’m Movin’ On.” The other bonuses of the deluxe edition, at least for Japanese listeners, were also great to hear. “Now and Then” and “Painting Pictures” were kept from the US release but we found them anyway.
8.5 blades for a great debut onto the US charts and will keep an ear out for a return.
